Meissner Team Members Take Home Awards in California State Fair Crafting Competitions

The 168th California State Fair officially opens next Friday, July 13th, but winners for several competition categories have already been announced. The competitions featured at the state fair showcase the talents and achievements of Californians recognizing the best in the state and displaying their work and talents in front of the more than 750,000 attendees that are expected to visit the fair this summer.

The winners from the Fiber Crafts competitions have been announced, and Meissner Sewing is proud to congratulate our extraordinarily talented instructors Tonja McCarthy, Inger Blood, and Shireen Hattan on their achievements in this year’s competitions.

Harmonious, By Tonja McCarthy
1st place: Wearing and Designer Apparel: Wearable Art

Meticulously pieced, quilted and studded in hundreds on Swarovski crystals, Tonja McCarthy, manager of Meissner Sewing’s long-arm quilting division originally created Harmonious in 2016. The beautiful coat took second place in the 2016 Hoffman Challenge; a prestigious national contest featuring quilting, clothing, and dolls; then toured the country as part of the Hoffman Challenge Collection 2016 which stopped at quilt shows, seminars, quilt shops, and quilt and doll-makers guilds around North America through October 2017.

Trip Around the World, By Inger Blood
Best of Division: Miniature Quilts
1st Place: Miniature Quilts: Class One: One Person

Inger Blood, one of our talented instructors at our Folsom location, was awarded Best of Division, 1st place and 4th place awards at this year’s state fair. Trip Around the World was inspired by a quilt Inger had seen made during the early 1900’s and was made for her friend Gail Fullbrook in England as part of the IMQE (International Miniature Quilt Exchange). The 24” x 24” finished quilt uses Dupioni Silk for the 1/2” pieced squares. The quilting was in the ditch between the squares, while ruler work quilting was used on the borders with free-motion fill. Wanting to attract more light to the quilt, Inger added Swarovski crystals. The binding is a double piped edge in two of the silk colors from the center motif.  Inger was also awarded 4th place in the Pieced Quilts: Class 2 - One Person Medium/Large for her quilt, Kaffe Fessett Diamonds.

Quilt Squad, By Shireen Hattan
4th Place: Applique Quilts: Class 1- One person/small

Shireen Hattan, award-winning long-arm quilter, and one of our talented instructors at our Folsom location, was awarded 4th place at this year’s state fair. Quilt Squad is a perfect exhibit of the fun that Shireen brings to her quilting students; while being an exquisite example of the applique and quilting techniques that Shireen has been using since first finding quilting.

Congratulations to our own Meissner Makers, and all the winners at the 2018 California State Fair! We are sew proud of your achievements!
