Meissner Foot Note: Open Sewing

Meissner Foot Notes: Bi-monthly posts featuring sewing tips and information about selected specialty presser feet for Baby Lock, BERNINA, Brother, and Janome machines.

Open Toe Brother Open toe presser feet are great for applique!

A presser foot with an opening between the two toes is great for applique and decorative stitching because you can clearly see the stitching area and the applique edges, making it easy to place the stitches exactly where you want. Most open toe feet have markings or notches that indicate the center of the foot; they also have markings to aid in aligning the needle where stitching is desired.

This type of presser foot can also be useful for edge stitching and topstitching using the inside of one of the toes as a guide for the fabric edge. Place the fabric edge along the inside edge of the right toe and adjust the needle position to stitch the desired distance from the edge. As you stitch, watch the edge of the fabric, guiding it along the toe and the stitching will be parallel to the fabric edge – all with no marking!

Using the correct presser foot for every sewing task can help you improve your sewing skills, sew more in less time, and give you more professional-looking results. Stop by any of the Meissner Sewing Centers to see a demo of this type of presser foot and others that fit your machine!
