Sacramento Quilter Goes to QuiltCon!

Susan Beck

ginaGina Boyd, a Meissner customer and relatively new member of the Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild recently received some great news. Her quilt, made for a Michael Miller fabric challenge, has been accepted into QuiltCon 2016! All challenge quilts had to be made with a Michael Miller collection and could also incorporate Michael Miller solids.

Gina decided to use the Michael Miller Glitz collection and aptly named her quilt, “Puttin on the Glitz”, in reference to the song, “Puttin on the Ritz” by Irving Berlin. Taking about 1 month to complete it from start to finish (amazing!), Gina created the quilt putting her own spin on the interleave technique and traditional flying geese pattern.

labelIn her artist statement on the quilt’s label, she explains a bit of the process involved in creating this quilt:

“I was curious how the interleave technique would look using a flying goose rectangle shape as a starting point. The glitz materials along with some Michael Miller solids emerged as a study in geometry with the direction of the strips on the sides adding interest.  It strikes me as having an Art Deco look, perfect backdrop for the Irving Berlin song.”

The contrast of circular quilting to the linear piecing enhances the overall look of both the front and back of the quilt. The contrast of circular quilting to the linear piecing enhances the overall look of both the front and back of the quilt.

Gina sent the quilt to Austin (home of the original QuiltCon) to be photographed and then the quilt will be on display in February 2016 at QuiltCon in Pasadena, CA.

Way to go, Gina!
